UK-GBC: Government scheme 'bold and welcome' March 4, 2010
The UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has expressed its delight at government plans to cut carbon emissions from British homes over the next decade.
It was revealed by the Department of Energy and Climate Change on Tuesday (March 2nd) that the state aims to insulate six million homes by the end of 2011, as well as all cavity walls and practical lofts by 2015 and offer eco-friendly home improvements to seven million households by 2020.
The measures are part of its Warm Homes, Greener Homes Strategy, which is hoped to reduce carbon emissions from domestic properties by 29 per cent.
Commenting on the proposals, Paul King, chief executive of the UK-GBC, said: "I'm delighted the government has adopted a key UK Green Building Council demand. This is a bold and welcome move."
He added that he is particularly pleased with the pay as you save system, which will offer homeowners a special kind of loan to cover the costs of the green refurbishments.
This will then be paid off over a period of 25 years with the money saved on energy bills as a result of the upgrades.
